The move effectively ended the vigilante operations of a creator who had amassed 2.3 million subscribers by highlighting what he described as systemic security failures within the gaming ecosystem.
The Conflict Between Vigilantism and Corporate Protocol
Roblox officials justified the ban by stating that while they recognize the severity of online predatory behavior, Schlep’s methods—specifically his failure to report suspicious activity through official channels—disrupted established security measures. In the legal notice reviewed by WIRED, the company argued that these unauthorized investigations “actively interfered” with their ability to manage safety effectively. Conversely, Schlep views the ban as a retaliatory strike intended to silence a vocal critic who exposed deep-seated vulnerabilities.
“The only way this can really be viewed in my eyes is Roblox is trying to silence a critic who has exposed the insane flaw in their platform: that there are sexual predators everywhere,” Schlep stated, suggesting the company aims to make an example of him to deter other independent investigators.

Schlep’s motivation stems from a personal history of abuse on the platform. He alleges that he was groomed on Roblox at age 12, an experience so severe it led to a suicide attempt. While he claims his mother’s subsequent reports to the company were ignored a decade ago, he launched his YouTube channel in 2023 to take matters into his own hands. His work involved collaborating with groups like “Pedophile Poachers” and “EDP Watch,” utilizing sting operations to lure targets into real-world encounters that were filmed and shared online.
According to Schlep, his investigations led to the arrests of six men. However, his methods have drawn criticism from extremism researchers and law enforcement, who argue that vigilante groups often prioritize social media engagement over securing viable criminal prosecutions. A Roblox spokesperson emphasized this stance, stating, “Taking the law into your hands isn’t safe in the real world, and it’s not safe online.”
Mounting Legal and Political Pressure on Roblox
The ban coincides with a wave of high-profile legal actions targeting Roblox’s safety record. Several states have recently filed lawsuits or launched investigations into the platform’s alleged role in facilitating child exploitation:

Schlep’s investigations frequently targeted “condo games”—illicit, user-generated spaces within Roblox that bypass content filters to host sexually explicit animations. While Roblox classifies these as “social hangout experiences,” Schlep describes them as hubs for predatory behavior. He noted that these communities often migrate to Discord to coordinate the creation of new links whenever Roblox shuts one down, creating a “game of whack-a-mole.”
Furthermore, Schlep highlighted the use of coded language, such as “cheese pizza,” a term originating from the 2016 Pizzagate conspiracy theory used to bypass filters when discussing child exploitation material. He alleged that some users even traded this material for “Robux,” the platform’s digital currency.
Community Backlash and the #FreeSchlep Movement
The decision to ban Schlep triggered a massive “FreeSchlep” movement across social media. The controversy has caused a rift within the platform’s creator community, with major influencers like Kindly Keyin (5.8 million subscribers) and ThinkNoodles (12.2 million subscribers) publicly resigning from the Roblox partner program in solidarity with the banned investigator.
Schlep’s legal representative, Martin Gould, argues that vigilante groups exist only because a vacuum in safety enforcement remains. “A lot of these people are doing what they’re doing because there’s a void,” Gould stated.
