These revelations emerged following X’s experimental rollout of a location-tracking feature designed to combat platform manipulation and enhance user transparency, exposing the global machinery behind seemingly local political movements.
The India Connection: “Fan Trump Army” Exposed
On Saturday, Trump shared a screenshot from an X account titled “Fan Trump Army,” which boasts over 500,000 followers. While the account prominently features Trump’s image and caters to a U.S. audience, X’s new location metadata identifies the operator as being based in India. The account’s influence is significant, counting several individuals convicted for the January 6 Capitol attack and former national security adviser Michael Flynn among its followers.
Following the exposure, the account holder updated their biography to state, “An Indian who loves America, President Trump, Musk!” However, archival data reveals that previous versions of the profile made no mention of the operator’s foreign location, presenting the persona of a domestic supporter.
Global Network: From Eastern Europe to Nigeria
The “Fan Trump Army” is not an isolated case. Investigations into X’s location data reveal a vast network of accounts claiming to be conservative voices from Texas or “America First” patriots while operating from Chile, Nigeria, Russia, and across Eastern Europe.
A prominent verified account, “MAGA NATION,” which commands nearly 400,000 followers and utilizes the American flag in its branding, was traced to a non-EU country in Eastern Europe. Similarly, a news account dedicated to Ivanka Trump, which amassed over 1 million followers, was found to be operating out of Nigeria before its eventual suspension. These accounts frequently circulate content regarding high-friction issues such as immigration, gender identity, and Middle Eastern geopolitics.
Targeted Rhetoric and the Africa-Based “Commentary” Account
On Sunday, Trump further boosted the reach of another verified account, “Commentary Donald J. Trump.” This profile, which features a bald eagle and the American flag, posted a poll questioning whether foreign-born citizens should be barred from holding public office. The post specifically targeted Representative Ilhan Omar and Somali-American lawmaker Omar Fateh.
X’s transparency tools indicate this account is managed from Africa. The amplification of this post triggered a wave of aggressive responses, with numerous users calling for the deportation of the elected U.S. officials featured in the post.

Nikita Bier, X’s head of product, introduced the location feature last month as a strategic move to provide authenticity in an era of digital misinformation. Bier emphasized that verifying content authenticity is “critical to getting a pulse on important issues.” The tool aims to expose bot farms and foreign influence operations by displaying the account’s creation country or current operating region.
The rollout has faced technical challenges. The feature was briefly retracted after the official U.S. Department of Homeland Security account incorrectly displayed a location in Israel—an error Bier attributed to shifting IP ranges affecting a small subset of legacy accounts. Despite these glitches, X officials stated that location accuracy would be upgraded to ensure the platform remains a transparent source of information.
