Prague’s historic center transformed into a high-tech luminous playground from October 16 to 19, 2024, as the 13th Signal Festival showcased 20 immersive installations from a global roster of visionaries. This year’s event, the largest digital art exhibition in Central Europe, achieved unprecedented international visibility following its prominent inclusion in Dan Brown’s latest blockbuster novel, The Secret of Secrets.
The Dan Brown Effect: Literary Prestige and Global Reach
The festival’s reputation reached new heights after Dan Brown integrated the event into the narrative of his latest bestseller. Set in modern-day Prague, the novel includes a sequence where the protagonist attends the 2024 Signal Festival. Festival Director Martin Pošta welcomed the recognition, noting that while the event already draws roughly 500,000 visitors annually, such literary exposure provides a unique tier of global validation and attracts a broader international audience.
Masterworks in Light: Bill Viola and Mist-Based Holograms
Massive crowds gathered at the Church of St. Salvator within the Convent of St. Agnes to witness Tristan’s Ascension by American video art pioneer Bill Viola. The installation utilized a monumental screen to depict a Christ-like figure ascending amidst gravity-defying water streams. Despite being a ticketed exhibit, the powerful work maintained long queues throughout its final evening, proving the public’s appetite for high-caliber digital art.
On the Vltava River, Taiwan’s Peppercorns Interactive Media Art debuted Tzolk’in Light, an experimental projection on a cloud of mist near the Dvořák Embankment. Unlike traditional mapping on static facades, this technique forced artists to collaborate with the elements. The shifting air currents determined the depth and visibility of the images, resulting in a three-dimensional, hologram-like spectacle that static surfaces simply cannot replicate.
Architectural Transformations Across the City
The Italian studio mammasONica reimagined the Old Town Hall, transforming its 230-foot tower into a shifting mosaic of primary colors and geometric patterns. Simultaneously, at Republic Square, Peppercorns presented a second work titled Between Mountains and Seas. This circular LED installation narrated the history of Taiwan through a sophisticated digital lens, blending cultural heritage with modern technology.
In the historic courtyard of the Clam-Gallas Palace, German artists Robert Seidel and Nikolai von Sallwitz presented MLHA (Fog). This immersive installation bridged the gap between Baroque architecture and contemporary aesthetics, saturating the space with a dense atmosphere of digital light and synchronized soundscapes.
Czech Innovation and the Vinohrady Circuit
While international studios dominated the city center, Czech artists took center stage in the Vinohrady neighborhood. Pavla Sceranková’s Constellation in Rieger Gardens allowed the public to interact with kinetic objects to create personalized light patterns. In a more provocative display, the Rafani collective presented Grill Flame near the Vinohrady water tower. This performance featured two trucks using flamethrowers to incinerate voodoo-like figures to the rhythm of apocalyptic electronic music, utilizing fire as a primal light source to challenge the digital norm.
At Svatopluk Čech Park, Antonín Kindl installed EYE, a spider-like robotic sphere. The object emitted light beams and cosmic audio in direct response to the movements of nearby spectators, creating an interactive dialogue between the machine and the public.
A Permanent Future for Signal
Organizers have already scheduled the 14th edition of the Signal Festival for October 15 to 18, 2026. To maintain momentum between festivals, they have launched Signal Space, Prague’s first permanent gallery dedicated to light and digital art. Located in the heart of the city, the gallery hosts a rotating selection of the most acclaimed works from previous festival editions, ensuring that Prague remains a global hub for digital creativity year-round.
