Meta is accelerating its hardware independence by developing four specialized AI semiconductors—the MTIA 300, 400, 450, and 500—engineered to optimize recommendation engines and generative AI workloads across Facebook and Instagram through 2027. In a strategic partnership with Broadcom, the social media giant is leveraging the open-source RISC-V architecture for these chips, with fabrication handled by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (TSMC), the global leader in foundry services.

An Aggressive Roadmap for Silicon Autonomy

The rollout marks a significant departure from traditional industry cycles. While the MTIA 300 is already in production, Meta expects to ship the subsequent generations—MTIA 400, 450, and 500—between early and late 2027. This rapid iteration is designed to keep pace with the volatile nature of artificial intelligence development, where software capabilities often outstrip hardware lifecycles.

YJ Song, Meta’s Vice President of Engineering, emphasized that the company is moving away from long-term hardware bets in favor of an agile, modular approach. “Rather than placing a bet and waiting for a long period of time, we deliberately take an iterative approach. Each MTIA generation builds on the last, using modular chiplets and incorporating the latest AI workload insights and hardware technologies,” Song stated, highlighting the necessity of adapting to evolving AI models.

Specialized Workloads: From Ranking to Inference

Meta is bifurcating its hardware strategy to handle distinct computational tasks. The MTIA 300 currently serves as the workhorse for training the complex algorithms that rank and suggest content to billions of users. Conversely, the upcoming trio—the 400, 450, and 500 series—is specifically optimized for inference, the resource-intensive process of running live AI models to generate text, images, and other media.

Technical Specifications and Performance Gains

Internal benchmarks suggest the MTIA 400 will deliver performance levels competitive with current market leaders, with deployment to data centers expected imminently. The roadmap shows a clear focus on memory scaling: the MTIA 450 will feature double the high-bandwidth memory (HBM) of its predecessor by early 2027. By late 2027, the MTIA 500 will further expand memory capacity while introducing proprietary innovations in low-precision data processing to enhance efficiency.

The Global Race for Custom AI Silicon

Meta’s pivot to in-house silicon aligns it with other industry titans seeking to mitigate reliance on third-party vendors. OpenAI has recently signaled a similar trajectory, partnering with Broadcom to develop custom accelerators. This move effectively counters earlier reports that Meta was scaling back its high-end chip ambitions to avoid direct confrontation with Nvidia. By establishing its own roadmap, Meta aims to secure the massive compute power required for next-generation AI research.

Despite this aggressive expansion into hardware, Meta remains a primary customer for external chipmakers. The company recently finalized multibillion-dollar procurement deals with Nvidia and AMD, while also securing agreements to utilize Google’s proprietary TPU infrastructure. For the foreseeable future, Meta’s strategy will remain hybrid: building custom silicon for specific internal efficiencies while purchasing the bulk of its raw processing power from established industry leaders.
